Gangtey

Gewog Profile (Description):

Gangtey Gewog is one of the beautiful valleys in the country located at 65Kms to the East of Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag with an area of 49.90 square kilometers. It shares border with Phobjikha Gewog in the South, Bjena Gewog in the West, Dangchu Gewog in the North-West frontier and Sephu Gewog towards the North. The altitude ranges from 2900-3200 meters above sea level with sandy loam soil which is very rich in humus with abundant coniferous forest. It has cool temperate climate and receives snowfall during Winter Season. The summer is mostly rainy and it is very stunning during spring with colorful rhododendron flowers all over the valley.

Gangtey is divided into five Chiwogs with 14 villages and consists of 325 households. The population is projected around 3000 including the floating population according to Gewog statistic of which 1234 are eligible voters. The settlements are mostly clustered and the communities share same culture, same dialect that is Dzongkha and majority of the communities depends on subsistence farming. In the past the resident of Gangtey used both Gangtey and Chitokha (now under Nysho Gewog) as their summer and winter residences respectively where they cultivate paddy at Chitokha and potatoes in Gangtey but now after the proper demarcation of Gewog in 2008, majority of residents of Gangtey have stopped their seasonal migration.

The Gewog has good road accessibility over 30kms of farm road constructed over the years connecting every villages and it has a highway which is under the jurisdiction of Department of Road. The telecommunication facilities cover whole Gewog where both mobile networks found in the country are available. Electricity coverage is 100% but the Gewog faces the challenges of frequent power cuts due to electric cables erected through the thick woods via Gogona and underground cables. Easy access to Health facility with the existing BHU-I at Yuesa Chiwog and 1 Out-Reach Clinic (ORC) at Gogona Chiwog for 3 villages delivers the basic health services to the people of the Gewog. The Phobjikha Middle Secondary School and 1 Primary School promotes the Education in the Gewog supplemented with 3 Non-Formal Education Centers for adults.

The Gewog is very rich in tradition and culture where every Chiwog consist of one Lhakhang and most importantly Gangtey Lhakhang including the Shedra plays the vital role in promoting the culture in particular with over 400 monks studying as of now. The culture is further promoted with the presence of supreme spiritual Master- His Holiness the Gangtey Tulku Rinpoche and performing many ceremonies and rituals.

The natural beauty of the valley and rich flora and fauna in particular the migration of Black-necked Cranes around mid October till end of February makes the place an attractive recreational destination for both Bhutanese and foreign visitors. Moreover, the introduction of Home-Stay program in the villages adds more value for the foreign visitors to experience the true living style, food habits and tradition & customs in general. There are many Resorts and Hotels available in the valley for the visitors as well providing necessary logistics.
