Coinciding with "World No Tobacoo Day" today, the Dzongkhag administration organized mass Marijuana uprooting program in 12 Gewogs and Throm areas. The program was participated by local communities led by the respective Gups, Desuups, Teachers, students, Dzongkhag staff , RBP and representative from the Bhutan Narcotics Control Authority (BNCA). The main marijuana uprooting program was carried out at Hebesa Chiwog under Gasetshowom Gewog, the largest marijuana growing area where about 40 acres of marijuana was uprooted and cleared today.
The 12 Gewogs combined covered approximately 52.6 acres. The Dzongkhag has received Budget support from BNCA. The main objective of the program was to support national efforts to prevent drug use and maintain Wangduephodrang Dzongkhag as a drug free Dzongkhag. It was also to create awareness about the ill-effects of this plant and to minimize its spread. Similar activities shall be carried out annually by the dzongkhag hereafter.
